Biography
Course Descriptions

Originally a California native, Dr. McMullen enlisted in the US Army in 1988, and was stationed in Germany. After a six year stint in the US Army, most of which was spent in Germany and the Middle East, and after gaining proficiency in the German language, he was accepted into veterinary school at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet in Munich, Germany. Throughout veterinary school he worked toward a future as a bovine practitioner, however, shortly before the start of his final clinical year he decided to pursue a career in equine medicine. He graduated from LMU in 2002 and immediately joined the university's Clinic for Horses, as a doctoral candidate. The large equine ophthalmology caseload at LMU enabled him to pursue, and obtain his doctorate on the role of equine adenoviruses in cases of putative viral keratitis or keratopathies. He was awarded the title of Doctor medicinae veterinariae (Dr. med. vet.) in 2005. In 2006 he obtained his Certification in Equine Ophthalmology (Zusatzbezeichnung Augenheilkunde-Pferd, CertEO-Germany), before returning to the US as a Resident in Comparative Ophthalmology at North Carolina State University. He completed his residency in 2009, and stayed on as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology.

His research areas of interest are: Intraocular lens development and phacoemulsification in the horse, equine vision, streak retinoscopy, the clinical use of digital infrared photography to enhance the diagnosis and monitor progression of various ophthalmic diseases, and the evaluation of endoscopic laser cyclophotocoagulation (ECP) in the horse.
