2011 RESIDENTS' WORKSHOP - “EYELID SURGERY”

Residents will welcome Dr. Frans Stades, Diplomate, European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists, Associate Professor Emeritus for Veterinary Ophthalmology at the Utrecht University, The Netherlands and after his retirement, still working in his private ophthalmology practice, performing eye clinics and involved in the training of residents, for a 3 hour presentation on eyelid surgery. Dr. Stades is internationally renowned for his knowledge of veterinary ophthalmic surgery. Eyelid surgery is one of his areas of special interest and this should be an excellent opportunity for residents in training (and others) to hear from an expert in this field.

Course Description
An introduction of general aspects, such as preparation of the operative field, positioning, draping, equipment, suturing, suture materials and principles of eyelid surgery will be given. The main subject of the presentation will cover the surgical approaches for congenital, hereditary, traumatic and neoplastic lid diseases.

Biography
Dr. Stades graduated in 1970 at the of Utrecht University and became assistant at the Department of Clinical Sciences of Companion Animals of the Veterinary Faculty of Utrecht. He had his education in ophthalmology from Drs. M.A.J. Verwer, Harlan Jensen (University Missouri, USA) and in the human ophthalmology clinic of the University of Utrecht. He became Head of the section Ophthalmology in 1973 and became Associate Professor of Veterinary Ophthalmology in 1985.

He completed his PhD in 1983 on PHTVL/PHPV in the Dobermann.
His main professional interests are: congenital diseases of the lens and vitreous, reconstructive surgery of the eyelids and presumed inherited eye diseases.

He was a Charter Diplomate, specialization Ophthalmology of the Royal Netherlands Veterinary Association in 1988. He became Charter Diplomate and first President of the ECVO in 1992. He still chairs the Credentials and Genetic Committee of the ECVO. In 1994-95 he was President of the ISVO. After his retirement in 2006, he is still working in his private Ophthalmology practice, performing eye clinics and involved in the training of residents.
